If the only difference between a hub and a repeater is that the former has multiple ports and the latter just has one set, then why are they two different things?

From Wikipedia:

An Ethernet hub, active hub, network hub, repeater hub, multiport repeater, or simply hub is a network hardware device for connecting multiple Ethernet devices together and making them act as a single network segment.

Was someone drunk or high the day they came up with this terminology? Am I being fucked with?

I am trying to go to this one website, and it is not displaying.

The support person says they have no record of me trying to connect. "Unfortunately, it looks like you may have a localized routing issue with your ISP, as there is no record of your IP attempting to contact the server during the time that you emailed this or for the time before that."

But, I can connect to the website via proxify.com.  I can't log in, naturally, but the page displays at all, which is more than I get when I try to connect normally.

...what do I do?

I have a stupid fucking question about IP addresses.

I have a virtual machine running Ubuntu/FF.  In there, I go here: whatismyipaddress.com

It returns:

Proxy Server Detected!

Proxy Server IP address: [the IP]
Proxy Server Details: 1.1 [the server name]

Proxy Reports IP as: [the IP]

However, I make a PHP page on a different server in our network, and have this:

echo $_SERVER['REMOTE_ADDR'];

I get: 192.168.0.[#]

Why?

FG didn't have any wireless network cards in, which is fine, I wasn't assuming.  They did help me with what to get, a bit - got a mild recommendation for a wireless card with an Athlon Atheros chipset.

*deer in headlights stare*

So I'm, um, just going to buy the Netgear WPN311 PCI Wireless Adapter, as it's inexpensive ($21.98, with shipping) and it's listed on the compatibility page as working out of the box.  For Intrepid, whereas I have Hardy, but I can always upgrade if necessary.

In the interim, I can get used to the new desktop, and maybe try to get the &%$* existing card to work.  Plus test hard drives.

*is dead*

I may just say fuck it and go to FG again and get a network card that works out of the box.  And yet, I am convinced that this should work.

Nrr.

Okay, I'll just tinker a bit now, whilst the cable's plugged in, and then to bed.

[eta] And when I create a new user, and I can't arrow-up...

Man, fuck this, I'm going to bed.

I went to Freegeek to get a different, slightly more supported wireless network card.  And it would have worked, too, if they hadn't been closed.  *mngh*  So, I will either go again after work some day this week, or I will get this to work.

Jody had a long enough cable so's I can connect to the internet.  I'm... doing... something, with linux-wlan-ng.  Or wpa_supplicant?  I don't know!  I just live here!

I may bring the whole thing with me to Freegeek, and ask them to fix it for me.

Full.  Of.  Frust.

Last chance:

I may post to ubuntuforums.org and see what they have to say.  In the meantime, I'm going to go do Something Else for a while.

The internet fucking sucks.  I am seriously sick to death of having to be in the same room as the modem/router if I want anything like decent internet access.  Aren't we in the future?  Can't I sit in my own goddamn kitchen and get wireless internets that is coming from inside the house around the damn corner?  Apparently not!  Wireless is only there so that I don't have to have an additional cable to trip over; it's not for convenience like having I dunno Google available at all times, which is key if you're me.  And I am!  Fascinating.

Since we're in the future, we should also have PDAs that can only be used within three feet of a telephone tower, right?  Or airplanes attached to gigantic bungee cords?  Oh hey, how about cell phones that only work if the person you're calling is no further than down the street!  I am so good at this.
