Bye

I overwrote and deleted my LJ. End of a thing, I suppose?

Selenium IDE script for overwriting and deleting.

I have put together a Selenium IDE script to overwrite previous entries, then delete them, individually. It takes a long while, but if you're looking with interest at this script, you probably already knew it wasn't gonna be swift.

You will need to agree to the TOS for this to work. There is no getting around that that I'm aware of. Sorry about that.

Details below the cut.

Technical, take two. )

I also have a total hax for the Python package "lj"... I'll put that up later.

Sharing is fine.

Further notes re DW/LJ.

You can use this GM script to block the TOS nag message. Alternatively, you can just disable JS for LJ.

Yay technical! )

I couldn't get it to do anything with comments, more's the pity.

Bye, LJ, bye-bye.

There's a new user agreement in place on LJ. You can read the original binding agreement here, or the English translation here. Time to skip town, those of you who haven't already!

Unfortunately, the LJ API now requires that you agree to their TOS before you can continue, making most LJ-export scripts unworkable. You could modify the scripts to accept the new API restriction... but odds are, if you are leaving because the new TOS sucks, you're not gonna want to accept it via scripting.

[personal profile] rosefox has a guide here for ad-blocking the TOS overlay. The instructions are almost certainly the same for Adblock/Plus. The two items to block:

##.b-fader
##.rutos.flatblue

Next stop, you can export your entries here. (HTTPS? What's that?) Downsides:

* You can only do journal entries, then comments.
* You can only do a month at a time.

I'm writing myself a quick-and-dirty Selenium script so that I do not have to do only one item at a time. I'll post it once I'm done, in case other people are similarly inclined.

Ha.

Another day, another LJ release that will leave users frustrated with their utter lack of options. If only there were another service, similar in kind, where the runners of the system don't pull this sort of thing!

Ah well. If folk haven't learned yet that complaining to LJ is about as useful as complaining to one's cat, then alas.

I miss the stars in LJ notes.  I don't have or want a paid account in LJ.  I installed Livejournal Addons, and disabled nearly everything but the notes part.  But, it only adds the title attribute for users with notes, it doesn't add a star.

So, I added one.

Steps to do this. )

On the one hand, I don't want to rub it in, or anything.

On the other hand, I do have 5 Dreamwidth invite codes.

--

[eta] Rub it in re the whole LJ DDoS nonsense, I mean.  I wasn't gloating about invite codes, or anything.

And I in fact have 16 total.  I just received one from DW, so I looked, and thought I had 5, because I can't read.

Why hello!

Ahhh, bliss.

LJ Notes-like thing for Dreamwidth.

And then:

LJ Notes-like thing for LJ.  (My paid account has lapsed on LJ, and I have no intention of buying any more time (and do not want such a thing, pls), but I do miss notes).

The only downside is, it's browser-specific.  But, I'm sure with a bit of tinkering, I can set up syncing somewhere s s s.

As a note, once Dreamwidth support folk get my issue resolved, I'm going to be importing all content over from [livejournal.com profile] ladytabitha and [livejournal.com profile] the_xtina to here, deleting my [livejournal.com profile] ladytabitha account, and probably moving primarily over to Dreamwidth.

I'll still cross-post to Livejournal, but to be honest, (a) I like DW and what it stands for, and (b) I'm really tired of waiting to find out how LJ's gonna fuck shit up today, approximately in that order, so whatevs whatevs.

In the recent LJ news post, a couple of folk asked how crossposting to FB would deal with images.  Specifically, you can set a thumbnail for your post, but is it hotlinked?  Can you use the poster's pics for the thumbnail?  Beuller?

http://news.livejournal.com/129945.html?thread=90206105&format=light#t90206105

So, I tested.  Largely because I could.

NOTE: This post will be updated as I figure out or am told new things.

* If you are making a public[1] post, you can crosspost to FB and choose no image, the userpic you're using, or any image you've put in the post.

* If you're commenting on a public[1] post with an image in it, you can crosspost to FB and choose no image, the userpic you're using, or any image you've put in your comment.  You cannot use any image related to the poster as a thumbnail.

* Any pic that is either used as a thumbnail or just put in the body of the comment or post is linked[1] thumbnailed in FB as:

http://platform.ak.fbcdn.net/www/app_full_proxy.php?app=189818072392&v=1&size=z&cksum=6a2e3b2284f1bbeb4cfdcb346db48fbe&src=[original_img_url]

If someone happens to know whether that means FB has saved the image locally or what, that'd be fantacular.

*[1] If you are commenting on a flocked post (general or custom), the Repost To section is still there, but the options are disabled.  It is, however, trivial to use a GM script to un-disable the checkbox.  With that undisabled, commenting on the post acts the same as on a public post.

*[1] A commenter can never select, from the "Choose a pic" link, a picture from the post/poster to use as a thumbnail.  However, as noted, they can use any picture in their comment.  This means I can use a GM script to undisable the checkbox, copy the URL of the image you posted into my comment, then use it as a thumbnail.

*[2] If I enable Cyrillic with the FB-enabled account, all public and flocked posts act like public posts -- it functions the same as though I'd written the GM script, I can repost images as noted above.

[1] [eta 13:58] Added the public v. flocked distinctions, and some notes on how GM can be used maliciously.

[2] [eta 14:04] Added a note on Cyrillic services, per [personal profile] moem.

Have I asked this before?

Where the eff are all the Dreamwidth proselytisers?  I see enthusiastic-for-DW folk, and folk on DW, and that's about it.  I read more complaints about proselytisers (and statements of "so therefore I'm not moving to DW!", thus further proving my "we are all 12" theory) than I have statements of how LJ sucks and everyone should move to DW *flounce*.

Mneh.

Stupid LJ.

LJ-specific o'clock:

Please don't crosspost comments on posts of mine to your Intertwitterfaceblags, pls.

You might see me have a FB thingamadoodle on my profile for a bit, but that's temporary whilst I tweak my Profile Reset GM script.  (I hadn't taken all external-services options into account, apparently.)  I not only have no intention of crossposting a damn thing, I wrote a script to remove even accidental clickage.  So no worries.

--

Here's what you can do to hide the options for yourself:

* Go here.  (Journal > Journal Style > Customize > CSS.)

* Add this line: .b-repost-item { display: none; }

* Click Save Changes.

That, at least, will prevent you from accidentally selecting one of the options when you make a comment.  Also, it sets commenting back to "[type] [tab] [enter]" to post the comment, which is pleasant.

Alas, this only works for certain journal styles, and not for format=light so much.  To get it for all styles, including format=light, you'd probably want to put this into Stylish, instead.  Naturally, I'll be doing this in GM, because I also want to remove that whole row, because I don't care about the settings and I like cleanliness in my comment forms.

Of course, I have approx. a million gazillion GM scripts, so this is hardly shocking.

Stylish code. )
